Sinikka Garcia of the Finnish American Club of Tucson has written a series of stories about the life of Sibelius and compiled them into a document available as a PDF click here to read “Janne Sibelius 1865-1957.” The FFN Sibelius 150 Jubilee was separate from but complemented the extensive celebration in Finland. The funds were awarded to FFN through Suomi Seura/Finland Society, Helsinki. In addition, a grant from the Finnish Ministry of Education enabled FFN to present concerts and programming related to Sibelius and other aspects of Finnish music and culture in the U.S. The committee is also surveyed symphony orchestras and compiled a Sibelius 150 Jubilee calendar of concerts and other programs and events in 2015. FFN made funding available to assist chapters with their Sibelius programming. Showcases of our artistic activities include about 600 concerts and other events each year, which are held in the core of Helsinki’s cultural life, the Helsinki Music Centre.Throughout 2015, Finlandia Foundation National joined in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Public concerts are an essential part of how our students grow to become artists. The targets of our research include producing, performing, receiving, teaching, and learning music, the history of musical practices, musical structures, musical interaction, the philosophy and aesthetics of music, and the interaction of music, the public, and society. Research and musical practices interact closely at the Sibelius Academy. On their individual study paths, students can both focus on a specialised area and develop versatile artistic professionalism. We strengthen students’ artistic skills and knowledge and prepare them for their careers. Jean Sibelius was at this time acknowledged as the most popular and successful composer in Finland. Opposition was met from Russian press, sparking a great divide in Finnish arts. The focus of the studies is for students to grow into professional artists at one with their own identity.
